Contrary Fitness Advice That Changed Me Forever

Disclaimer: I’m not “jacked,” nor did I go to kinesiology school. But I have worked out for most of my life (and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night). And, at 40, I’m in the best shape of my life.

Perhaps that’s subjective, however, I feel at the top of my performance when doing what I love like surfing, skateboarding, hiking, mountain biking, and snowboarding.

So what fitness advice did I find counterproductive?

The Flaw That Held My Training Back For Years

If you grew up working out in the ’90s or prior, then you trained like this: three sets of 6–12 reps of each exercise with dumbbells or machine. Fifteen-minute cardio warmup. Maybe.

The gym was like a game of musical chairs. We went from station to station. Want more mass? Add more weight, do fewer reps. Want to be lean? Less weight, more reps.

But there’s an excruciating side effect, did you spot it?

It’s the skull-numbing boredom of counting 1, 2, 3…over and over again. For. The. Rest. Of. Your. Life.

There’s no challenge. No entertainment. No fun!

Who cares about fun though, right? Fun is for wimps. This is the ‘90s! No pain, no gain! No fear! Bulls on parade!
